FRITZ!Box 4690 Multi-Gigabit Router, 1x 10GigE WAN/LAN, 1x 10GigE LAN, 3x 2.5Gig LAN, Wi-Fi 7
Wi-Fi 7 router with 10 Gigabit WAN and LAN, 2.5 Gigabit ports, Mesh Wi-Fi, VPN and DECT telephony for fast fibre-connected homes and offices.
The FRITZ!Box 4690 is a dual-band Wi-Fi 7 router with 10 Gigabit WAN, 10 Gigabit LAN and three 2.5 Gigabit LAN ports, designed for high-speed fibre connections and demanding home or small-office networks. Combining FRITZ! Mesh Wi-Fi, VPN access, integrated VoIP telephony and USB storage sharing, it brings networking and communications together in one device.
10 Gigabit connectivity for fibre broadband
The FRITZ!Box 4690 connects to an external fibre ONT, cable modem or DSL modem through its Ethernet WAN port. Its 10 Gigabit WAN interface provides capacity for multi-gigabit broadband services, while the separate 10 Gigabit LAN port supports a high-speed connection to a compatible switch, workstation or NAS.
Three additional 2.5 Gigabit LAN ports accommodate devices that need more bandwidth than standard Gigabit Ethernet. This makes the router useful for networks handling large file transfers, cloud backups and several active users.
The 4690 requires an external modem or ONT; it does not connect directly to a fibre cable or DSL telephone line. Internet performance depends on the broadband service, ONT, configuration and connected equipment.
Dual-band Wi-Fi 7 with 4×4 MIMO
The FRITZ!Box 4690 delivers Wi-Fi 7 on the 5 GHz band at theoretical rates of up to 5,760 Mbit/s, alongside Wi-Fi 6 on 2.4 GHz at up to 1,200 Mbit/s. Both bands use 4×4 MIMO.
This combination supports newer high-performance devices while retaining connectivity for older laptops, phones and smart-home equipment. WPA3/WPA2 encryption and separate guest Wi-Fi provide practical options for securing wireless access.
The advertised combined rate of 6,960 Mbit/s represents the total theoretical capacity across both bands, rather than the speed available to one device. Actual throughput depends on client capabilities, distance, interference and network conditions.
FRITZ! Mesh Wi-Fi for wider coverage
Compatible FRITZ!Repeaters extend coverage as part of a coordinated Mesh network. The FRITZ!Box and Mesh devices work together to steer clients towards a suitable access point or wireless band.
For larger homes or offices with coverage gaps, an optional FRITZ!Repeater 6000 is a compatible expansion option. Repeater placement and the connection back to the router remain important when planning coverage and performance.
Integrated VoIP phone system and DECT base
The built-in telephone system supports up to six DECT cordless phones, SIP-compatible IP phones and two analogue telephone connections. This allows users to retain suitable existing handsets while using an internet telephony service.
Features include five answering machines with voice-to-email, call diversion, call transfer, three-party conferencing, call blocking and fax functionality. SIP TLS and SRTP support encrypted signalling and voice where supported by the service.
For New Zealand installations, confirm that the chosen VoIP provider supplies compatible SIP settings. Handsets and the telephony service are purchased separately.
FRITZ!OS management, security and VPN access
FRITZ!OS provides browser-based configuration, network diagnostics and automatic updates. Its firewall, access filters and parental controls help users manage internet access, while guest Wi-Fi provides a separate connection for visitors.
WireGuard and IPSec VPN support enable secure remote access to the network. MyFRITZ! and FRITZ!Apps add convenient access and management options, with free FRITZ!OS updates providing ongoing improvements.
USB storage sharing and smart-home integration
Connect compatible USB storage to the USB 3.0 port to share files through FRITZ!NAS or use the integrated media server. The USB connection also supports compatible printers and mobile broadband dongles, including mobile fallback functionality.
The built-in DECT ULE base supports compatible smart-home devices, with schedules and automation managed through the FRITZ! interface or app. USB devices, mobile dongles and smart-home accessories are optional; check compatibility before deployment.
