Opengear CM8004-LSP Console Manager – Compact Smart Out-of-Band Management with Lighthouse Service Portal

The Opengear CM8004-LSP Console Manager is a compact Smart Out-of-Band (Smart OOB™) management appliance combining four serial console ports, dual Gigabit Ethernet/SFP connectivity, enterprise security, powerful automation capabilities, and Lighthouse Service Portal (LSP) enablement. Designed for branch offices, retail locations, network closets, remote edge sites, and distributed infrastructure, the CM8004-LSP provides secure access to critical network equipment when normal production network access is unavailable, while simplifying deployment into Opengear Lighthouse environments.

Compact Smart Out-of-Band Management

The Opengear CM8004-LSP provides an independent management platform for critical network infrastructure, allowing IT teams to remotely diagnose, configure, and recover equipment when conventional network management access is unavailable.

Key features include:

  • 4 × RJ45 RS-232 serial console ports
  • Lighthouse Service Portal enabled
  • Zero-touch Lighthouse enrolment capability
  • 2 × 1GbE/SFP combo network interfaces
  • 2 × USB 3.0 ports
  • Smart Out-of-Band management
  • Secure and audited remote console access
  • Network redundancy and automatic failover capabilities
  • TPM 2.0 hardware security
  • Docker and automation support
  • Integrated PDU support for remote power management
  • Compact form factor for branch, edge, and remote environments

Lighthouse Service Portal Enabled

The CM8004-LSP is factory-enabled for Opengear Lighthouse Service Portal (LSP), helping simplify deployment and Lighthouse enrolment across distributed infrastructure.

Lighthouse Service Portal allows an LSP-enabled Opengear appliance to perform a zero-touch call-home and automatically enrol into the customer's designated Lighthouse instance.

When the CM8004-LSP is powered on and provided with suitable Internet connectivity, the LSP process can securely identify the appliance and obtain the appropriate Lighthouse enrolment information associated with that device. This reduces the amount of manual configuration required at the remote location and can make deployment considerably easier when Opengear appliances are being installed across multiple branch, retail, edge, or remote sites.

Device identity is protected using TPM-based authentication, providing a secure mechanism for automated Lighthouse enrolment.

Important: Lighthouse Service Portal enabled hardware does not mean that a Lighthouse software licence or node subscription is included with the appliance. A separate applicable Lighthouse licence/subscription is required to use Lighthouse management services.

LSP capability is factory provisioned and is intended to provide a streamlined, zero-touch method of bringing the appliance into the appropriate Lighthouse environment.

Four-Port Serial Console Management

The CM8004-LSP provides four RJ45 RS-232 Cisco Straight X2 pinout serial console ports for direct management of critical infrastructure.

Typical connected equipment includes:

  • Routers
  • Ethernet switches
  • Firewalls
  • Servers
  • UPS systems
  • PDUs
  • Storage appliances
  • Telecommunications equipment
  • Other serial-managed network infrastructure

Serial console access provides an important alternative to conventional IP-based management. If a router has been misconfigured, a firewall becomes inaccessible, or another network device loses normal connectivity, administrators can still use its physical console interface through the CM8004-LSP.

This allows authorised IT staff to troubleshoot and recover equipment remotely rather than requiring someone to physically attend the site.

Flexible Gigabit Ethernet and SFP Connectivity

The Opengear CM8004-LSP provides two 1GbE/SFP combo interfaces, giving organisations the flexibility to use either copper Gigabit Ethernet or compatible SFP fibre connectivity according to their network requirements.

This makes the CM8004-LSP suitable for:

  • Copper or fibre management networks
  • Dedicated Out-of-Band networks
  • Network redundancy
  • Management network separation
  • Branch and edge deployments
  • Existing fibre infrastructure
  • Distributed enterprise environments

The combination of copper and fibre connectivity allows the appliance to integrate easily into a wide variety of network architectures.

Remote Power Management and PDU Integration

Remote console access can resolve many infrastructure problems, but occasionally an unresponsive device needs to be physically restarted.

The CM8000 Series includes integrated PDU support for remote power management, allowing compatible power infrastructure to be managed alongside serial-connected equipment.

This enables administrators to combine console access with remote power control. If a router, firewall, switch, server, or other device becomes completely unresponsive, it may be possible to remotely power-cycle the equipment rather than dispatching a technician to the location.

For organisations operating multiple remote sites, this capability can help reduce Mean Time to Repair (MTTR), minimise downtime, and reduce costly onsite service visits.

Powerful Automation Platform

The CM8004-LSP is built on a modern 1.6GHz quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 platform with 4GB LPDDR4 memory and 32GB eMMC storage, providing considerably more capability than a traditional basic serial console server.

Automation and scalability features include:

  • Docker container support
  • Python
  • Ruby
  • Ansible
  • Zero Touch Provisioning
  • API-based management
  • SNMP support
  • Automated monitoring and remediation

These capabilities allow organisations to automate common infrastructure deployment, monitoring, troubleshooting, and recovery processes directly at remote locations.

Enterprise Security with TPM 2.0

Because Out-of-Band management provides privileged access to critical network equipment, the CM8004-LSP incorporates enterprise-grade security features including a Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 2.0.

Security and authentication capabilities include:

  • TPM 2.0 hardware security
  • TACACS+
  • RADIUS
  • Active Directory
  • OpenLDAP
  • Local authentication fallback
  • IPSec
  • OpenVPN
  • Secure HTTPS management
  • SSH administration
  • Role-based access controls
  • Secure and audited console access

TPM 2.0 also plays an important role in securely identifying the LSP-enabled appliance during the automated Lighthouse enrolment process.

Centralised Management with Opengear Lighthouse

Once enrolled, the CM8004-LSP can be centrally managed using Opengear Lighthouse, providing centralised visibility and control across Opengear appliances and connected infrastructure deployed at multiple locations.

Lighthouse is particularly valuable for:

  • Distributed enterprises
  • Managed service providers
  • Retail networks
  • Telecommunications providers
  • Multi-site organisations
  • Remote infrastructure operators
  • Large branch networks

Rather than individually managing every console manager, Lighthouse provides a central platform through which administrators can access and manage Opengear infrastructure across their environment.

The LSP-enabled CM8004-LSP simplifies the initial deployment and enrolment process, making it particularly attractive for organisations rolling out Opengear appliances across multiple remote locations.

A separate Lighthouse licence/node subscription is required.

Compact Design for Branch and Edge Deployments

The CM8000 Series is designed specifically for environments where the number of serial-managed devices is relatively small or where rack space is limited.

Its compact 1RU half-rack-width form factor makes the CM8004-LSP particularly well suited to locations where installing a conventional full-width console manager would be unnecessary or impractical.

Typical applications include:

  • Branch offices
  • Retail stores
  • Network closets
  • Remote edge sites
  • Telecommunications POPs
  • Small data centre racks
  • Managed service provider deployments
  • Distributed enterprise networks
  • Utility and industrial locations
  • Unattended infrastructure sites

Opengear Support Licence Requirement

Note. All Opengear deployments require a support license, meaning a support option must be included with every new hardware purchase.

Foundation Support delivers day-to-day assurance with regional coverage and advanced hardware replacement.

Premium Support adds 24×7 global coverage, priority escalation, and expert services for complex environments.

Existing Customers: When Foundation or Premium is purchased for any new device, all existing devices under original warranty automatically upgrade at no additional cost for the remainder of the existing term.
