Opengear CM8004-C-LSP Console Manager – 5G Smart Out-of-Band Management with Lighthouse Service Portal

The Opengear CM8004-C-LSP Console Manager is a compact Smart Out-of-Band (Smart OOB™) management appliance combining four serial console ports, integrated global 5G cellular connectivity, dual Gigabit Ethernet/SFP interfaces, enterprise security, powerful automation capabilities, and Lighthouse Service Portal (LSP) enablement. Designed for branch offices, retail locations, network closets, remote edge sites, and distributed infrastructure, the CM8004-C-LSP provides an independent and resilient way to access, troubleshoot, and recover critical network equipment when the primary network is unavailable.

Smart Out-of-Band Management with 5G Cellular Resilience

The Opengear CM8004-C-LSP provides secure access to critical network infrastructure independently of the production network. If a primary WAN connection fails, administrators can use its integrated cellular capability as an alternative path to reach the console manager and troubleshoot connected equipment.

Key features include:

  • 4 × RJ45 RS-232 serial console ports
  • Integrated global 5G cellular modem
  • 2 × 4FF nano-SIM slots
  • Lighthouse Service Portal enabled
  • Zero-touch Lighthouse enrolment capability
  • 2 × 1GbE/SFP combo network interfaces
  • Smart Out-of-Band management
  • Secure and audited remote console access
  • Automatic network failover
  • TPM 2.0 hardware security
  • Docker and automation support
  • Integrated PDU support for remote power management
  • Compact form factor for branch and edge environments

Lighthouse Service Portal Enabled

The CM8004-C-LSP is factory-enabled for Opengear Lighthouse Service Portal (LSP), simplifying the deployment of Opengear infrastructure across distributed sites.

Lighthouse Service Portal allows an LSP-enabled Opengear appliance to perform a zero-touch call-home and automatically enrol into the customer's designated Lighthouse instance.

When an appropriately configured CM8004-C-LSP is powered on and provided with Internet connectivity, the LSP process can securely identify the appliance and retrieve the appropriate Lighthouse enrolment information associated with its serial number. This can significantly simplify deployment when large numbers of Opengear appliances are being installed across branch, retail, edge, or remote locations.

Device identity is protected using TPM-based authentication, helping provide a secure automated enrolment process without requiring technicians to manually configure Lighthouse connectivity at each site.

Important: Lighthouse Service Portal enabled hardware does not include a Lighthouse software licence or node subscription. A separate applicable Lighthouse licence/subscription is required to use Lighthouse management services.

LSP capability is factory provisioned and cannot be added to a standard non-LSP CM8004-C appliance in the field.

Global 5G Cellular Connectivity for Network Failover

The CM8004-C-LSP incorporates a global 5G cellular modem and two nano-SIM slots, providing an alternative communications path when primary wired connectivity is unavailable.

This is one of the key advantages of deploying Smart Out-of-Band management. If the WAN connection, firewall, router, or production network fails, administrators may still be able to connect through the independent cellular path and access the console of the affected equipment.

The CM8004-C-LSP can provide console access to equipment including:

  • Routers
  • Ethernet switches
  • Firewalls
  • Servers
  • UPS systems
  • PDUs
  • Storage appliances
  • Telecommunications equipment
  • Other serial-managed infrastructure

For remote and unattended locations, this can dramatically reduce the need to dispatch technicians simply to gain physical console access to failed infrastructure.

Four-Port Serial Console Management

The CM8004-C-LSP provides four RJ45 RS-232 Cisco Straight X2 pinout serial console ports, allowing administrators to directly connect and manage critical infrastructure independently of its normal network interfaces.

Serial console access is particularly valuable during configuration errors, firmware problems, routing failures, firewall outages, or other situations where the normal IP management interface of a device cannot be reached.

The CM8004-C-LSP provides secure and audited remote console access, allowing authorised administrators to troubleshoot equipment as though they were physically connected to its console port.

Flexible Gigabit Ethernet and SFP Connectivity

The Opengear CM8004-C-LSP provides two 1GbE/SFP combo interfaces, allowing copper Gigabit Ethernet or compatible SFP fibre connectivity to be used according to the requirements of the deployment.

This provides flexibility for:

  • Copper or fibre management networks
  • Dedicated Out-of-Band networks
  • Network redundancy
  • Automatic failover
  • Management network separation
  • Branch and edge environments
  • Existing fibre infrastructure

Combined with integrated 5G cellular connectivity, the CM8004-C-LSP provides multiple potential paths for maintaining access to critical infrastructure.

Remote Power Management and PDU Integration

Being able to reach the console of a failed device solves many network problems remotely. However, some faults require the equipment to be physically restarted.

The CM8000 Series includes integrated PDU support for remote power management, allowing compatible power infrastructure to be managed alongside serial-connected equipment.

Administrators can therefore combine remote console access with remote power control, potentially allowing an unresponsive router, firewall, switch, server, or other device to be power-cycled without sending a technician to the site.

This can help reduce both Mean Time to Repair (MTTR) and costly onsite service visits.

Powerful Automation Platform

The CM8004-C-LSP is considerably more capable than a traditional basic console server. It is built around a 1.6GHz quad-core ARM platform with 4GB memory and 32GB internal flash storage, providing the processing resources required for modern automation and remote management.

Automation capabilities include:

  • Docker container support
  • Python
  • Ansible
  • Zero Touch Provisioning
  • API-driven management
  • Automated monitoring and remediation
  • Remote configuration workflows

These capabilities allow organisations to automate common deployment, monitoring, troubleshooting, and recovery processes at remote sites.

Enterprise Security with TPM 2.0

Because Out-of-Band management provides privileged access to critical infrastructure, security is fundamental to the CM8004-C-LSP design.

The appliance incorporates Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 2.0 hardware security, which also plays an important role in securely identifying LSP-enabled devices during automated Lighthouse enrolment.

Security and access capabilities include:

  • TPM 2.0 hardware security
  • Secure SSH administration
  • HTTPS management
  • Role-based access controls
  • Secure and audited console access
  • Enterprise authentication integration
  • VPN support
  • Secure Lighthouse integration

This enables organisations to maintain emergency and remote management access without compromising the security of the infrastructure being protected.

Centralised Management with Opengear Lighthouse

Once enrolled, the CM8004-C-LSP can be centrally managed through Opengear Lighthouse, providing a common management platform for Opengear infrastructure distributed across multiple locations.

Lighthouse can provide administrators with centralised visibility and control across their Opengear deployment, making it particularly useful for enterprises, MSPs, telecommunications providers, retailers, and other organisations managing large numbers of remote sites.

The LSP-enabled version simplifies the initial deployment process by providing a secure zero-touch mechanism for associating the appliance with the appropriate Lighthouse environment.

A separate Lighthouse licence/node subscription is required.

Compact Design for Branch and Edge Deployments

The CM8000 Series is purpose-built for locations with a relatively small number of serial-managed devices or where rack space is limited.

The CM8004-C-LSP is particularly suited to:

  • Branch offices
  • Retail stores
  • Network closets
  • Remote edge sites
  • Telecommunications POPs
  • Distributed enterprise networks
  • Managed service provider deployments
  • Remote data centre racks
  • Utility and industrial locations
  • Unattended infrastructure sites

Its combination of four serial ports, copper/fibre Ethernet, 5G cellular connectivity, remote power integration, and zero-touch Lighthouse enrolment makes it particularly well suited to large-scale distributed deployments.

Why Choose the Opengear CM8004-C-LSP?

The Opengear CM8004-C-LSP combines compact Smart Out-of-Band management, 5G cellular resilience and Lighthouse Service Portal enablement in a platform designed specifically for distributed and remote infrastructure.

If the primary network fails, the integrated cellular connection can provide an independent route into the site. Administrators can then access the serial console of connected routers, switches, firewalls, and other equipment to diagnose and recover the network. Integrated PDU support can extend this capability to remote power control when equipment needs to be restarted.

For organisations deploying Opengear across many locations, the LSP-enabled version provides another important advantage. Rather than manually enrolling every appliance into Lighthouse, the CM8004-C-LSP is factory-enabled to securely call home and automatically enrol into the appropriate Lighthouse environment.

The result is a compact platform designed to simplify deployment, maintain remote access during network outages, reduce onsite callouts, accelerate recovery, and provide centralised management across distributed infrastructure.
