Power over Ethernet (PoE) is a technology for the delivery of power and Ethernet data on the same cabling. PoE technology saves time and the cost of installing separate power cabling, ac outlets and wall warts, and eliminates the need for a dedicated uninterruptible power supply (UPS) for individual devices.
The power delivered over the Ethernet infrastructure is automatically activated when a compatible terminal is identified and blocked to non-compliant devices, such as desktop computers and laptops. This lets users freely and safely mix non-compliant and PoE-compatible devices on their network.
Numerous practical PoE applications have been developed to date. However, new applications have emerged that need more power than the power limit defined by today's 802.3af standard, which is about 13W at the powered-device (PD) end.
The LevelOne POI-4000 is a high power, PSE Power Injector for use in Power over Ethernet systems. With Ethernet Input (data only) port and Output (data power) port, the POI-4000 delivers up to 40 Watts over Cat.5/6/7. This provides excellent support for PD devices such as PoE IP surveillance cameras, outdoor access points or PoE VoIP telephones.
